> Stillhouse photographs every bowl, mug and vase in your range in one set, with the glaze, the form and the finish checked against your own photo. Handmade work varies from piece to piece, and the frame shows the piece you actually photographed.

## Photographing ceramics

Ceramics are sold on glaze and form. A glaze is a depth of colour with pooling, speckle and a break at the edge. A mug is a shape you want to hold.

Handmade ceramics also vary. Two mugs from the same batch are not the same, so each product photo has to be a picture of that piece, not an average of the line.

## Common photo problems

- **Glaze flattens.** Pooling, crackle and speckle are the character of the piece. Smoothed out, it reads as a factory print.
- **Gloss reflects the room.** A glossy glaze mirrors its surroundings. It should reflect the set it is in.
- **Variation.** A one-off piece is a single product. The picture must match that piece.
- **Tableware is bought as a set.** Plates, bowls and mugs have to be seen together and sit in the same light.

## What the studio does about it

- **Glaze checked against your photo.** The studio compares each frame with the photo you upload, so the colour and speckle belong to your piece.
- **Lit by the set.** Glossy surfaces pick up the room's window instead of a studio box.
- **One table, every piece.** Plates, bowls and mugs are each photographed in the same set and light, so they sit together on a product page.

## The shot list for ceramics

- Hero of the piece on a surface in the set
- Close-up of the glaze and the rim
- In use: a mug with coffee, a bowl with food
- Scale beside a hand
- A set arranged together on a table
- A silent clip of a slow push-in

## Questions

### Will my glaze look right?

The studio checks each frame against your product photo. Glaze colour depends on the light in your photo, so photograph the piece in neutral daylight.

### What about one-of-a-kind pieces?

Upload a photo of the piece itself. The studio photographs that piece and checks the frame against it.

### Can I show food in a bowl?

Yes, as a still life in the set. Food is harder to get right than the bowl, so look at the frame before you publish.
