Shopify product image checker: size, shape and file weight

Updated ยท Stillhouse

The short answer

Drop a product photo on this page and it is checked against Shopify's limits and best practice: at most 5000 x 5000 pixels, a square image around 2048 x 2048 pixels, a file under 20 MB, and a note on whether WebP would make the file lighter. The check runs in your browser. The image is never uploaded.

What Shopify accepts

Shopify takes product images up to 5000 x 5000 pixels (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB. It recommends PNG and JPEG, and also accepts WebP, GIF, TIFF and others. Shopify says a square image of 2048 x 2048 pixels usually displays best. These figures come from Shopify's help centre and are set out in Shopify product image size.

  • Dimensions. Under 5000 pixels each way, and big enough to zoom. The checker passes anything from 2048 pixels on the longest side up to the limit, and warns below that.
  • Shape. A square image works with every theme. A 4:5 portrait suits fashion. What matters most is that the whole catalogue uses one ratio, so a collection grid does not jump.
  • File size. Under 20 MB is the hard limit. Over 2 MB is heavy for a product page, and the checker warns.
  • Format. JPEG and PNG are safe. WebP is usually lighter at the same quality, and Shopify accepts it.

How this checker works

The image is opened in your browser and its dimensions, type and size are read from the file. Nothing is sent to a server.

The shape is compared with a square and with 4:5. The format advice is based on the file type and weight: a JPEG or PNG over 500 KB gets a suggestion to try WebP, and a PNG of a photograph gets a stronger one, because PNG is lossless and photographs are large in it.

What the checker cannot tell you

It does not judge the picture. It cannot tell whether the product is sharp, centred, consistently sized from one image to the next or lit like the rest of your store, and those matter more to a shopper than the pixel count. See how to judge an AI product photo for what to look at.

Fixing a failed check

  • Too large: resize to 2048 pixels on the longest side. Shopify serves resized copies to each device, so a bigger master costs upload time and gives little.
  • Not square: pad or crop to 1:1, or pick one ratio such as 4:5 and use it everywhere.
  • File too heavy: export a JPEG at 80 to 85 quality, or WebP.
  • PNG photograph: export it as a JPEG or WebP. Keep PNG for graphics and transparency.

Publishing to Shopify from Stillhouse

Stillhouse connects to Shopify directly. An approved frame is published to its product page in the size and ratio you chose, with one-press undo, and every product is photographed in the same set so the collection stays consistent.

Questions

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser and the image never leaves your device.

What is the best size for Shopify product images?

Shopify says 2048 x 2048 pixels, square, usually displays best.

Should I use WebP?

Shopify accepts WebP and it is usually lighter than JPEG or PNG at the same quality. If your file is heavy, it is worth trying.
