AI product video for ecommerce: the short clips that work, and how to check them
Updated · Stillhouse
The short answer
The AI product videos that work on a product page are short - a few seconds - silent so they autoplay, and made from an approved photo: a slow push-in, a gentle turn, or ambient motion that loops. The main risk is the product warping or its label changing mid-clip, so every frame of the clip needs checking, not just the first.

Why short and silent
Browsers let a video autoplay only when it is muted, and most shoppers scroll a product page with the sound off anyway. A silent clip of a few seconds plays inline as the page loads, without a tap, and reads as a living photograph rather than an advert. It also keeps the file small enough not to slow the page.
Three moves that work
| Move | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Push-in | The camera moves slowly towards the product | Hero frames, texture and detail, on-model shots |
| Turn | The product or camera turns gently to show another side | Shoes, bags, bottles - anything with a shape worth seeing |
| Ambient loop | Light, steam, a flame or fabric moves while the product stays still, looping without a jump | Candles, drinks, homeware; backgrounds for banners |
What goes wrong, and how to check
- The product warps. Video models are worse than image models at holding a shape over time. Scrub through the clip frame by frame, not just the first and last.
- The label crawls. Text that is sharp in frame one may re-letter itself by frame forty.
- A hidden cut. Some generations jump between two takes. A product clip should be one continuous take.
- A loop that jumps. For an ambient loop, the last frame must flow into the first.
Where the clips go
- Product pages. Shopify accepts product videos up to 10 minutes, 1 GB and 4K as .mp4, .mov or .webm - a few-second clip is well inside that. See Shopify product image and video sizes.
- Stories, reels and ads. Cut to 9:16 for vertical placements and 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds.
- Banners and email. An ambient loop behind a headline, or a still from it where video cannot play.
How Stillhouse makes product clips
Any approved frame can be made to move for a few seconds: a slow push-in, a gentle turn, or ambient motion that loops without a jump. The clip starts on the frame you approved, is checked for the product all the way through and for being one clean take, and is silent so it autoplays. A take that fails is thrown away and made again before it reaches you. A delivered clip is five credits.
Questions
How long should a product video be?
For a product page, a few seconds is enough: long enough to show shape, light or texture moving, short enough to loop and load fast. Longer videos suit demonstrations and ads.
Should product videos have sound?
Not on a product page. Browsers only autoplay muted video, and a silent clip plays inline without a tap.
